For sustainable development, you need diverse and strong partners. On 3 September 2010, BMZ – together with DED, GTZ, Inwent and KfW – invited 1800 guests to the former chancellor’s garden in Bonn. Decision-makers from politics, business and civil society, as well as public personalities, talked about partnerships and the future of development work. An interactive display and discussion area on ‘getting involved’ gave the guests an insight into development practice.
Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Bonn hosted the event ‘Engagement fairbindet – Gemeinsam für Entwicklung’ – a platform for sharing experience – in the former chancellor’s garden. The evening was held in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, the German Development Service (DED), Inwent – Capacity Building International and KfW Entwicklungsbank, and with the support of the City of Bonn and the United Nations in Bonn. It was attended by 1800 guests including public figures such as the politician Hans-Dietrich Genscher and TV journalist Sabine Christiansen. The focus of discussion was on development action and civic engagement.

'We will support the dynamic forces at the heart of our society and use them effectively for development – in our partner countries and in Germany.' When he first took office as Federal Development Minister, these were the words chosen by Dirk Niebel to present the new direction of German development cooperation. The main thrust of this approach is to increase the involvement of the private sector and civil society. Effective networks, new forms of cooperation and alliances and fair interaction between all parties are intended to help place development cooperation on a broader footing within society. The special event Engagement fairbindet – gemeinsam für Entwicklung, devised by GTZ AgenZ, helped put across this new message.

Well-known figures from the realms of civil society, industry, politics, the media, non-governmental organisations and the world of entertainment met in the gardens of the former Federal Chancellery in Bonn for this wide-ranging specialist exchange and fact-finding event. Their aim was to share their experience and expectations of development and civil society involvement and to initiate and extend joint ventures. What they all had in common was the will for development cooperation to be geared to harnessing the potentials and opportunities generated by fair competition between ideas – both in Germany and its partner countries. This forum is to become a regular event and will be held every two years.

Communication platform for social involvement

The central forum for communication at the event was the Global Plaza. In numerous discussion groups, respected personalities and high-profile representatives of politics, culture and society, including Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Rita Süssmuth, Ingrid Matthäus-Maier, Sabine Christiansen, Wolfgang Niedecken, Nadja Auermann and Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff, aired their ideas for the future direction of development cooperation.

The 'Get Involved Circuit' gave visitors an insight into numerous examples of best practices. A total of 56 organisations and institutions manned information stands and discussion corners, providing information about their involvement in social and development policy, and showing how theory can be put into practice. The organisations represented ranged from non-governmental organisations to political and private foundations and private companies and business associations. Together they demonstrated the many and varied approaches that make for successful problem-solving and networking in the development cooperation context.

The cultural programme at the Global Plaza reflected a similarly wide spectrum, with ballads from Wolfgang Niedecken and Anne de Wolff, Farhad Darya's ethno rock and Nena’s '99 Luftballons' winding up the late summer evening. AgenZ’s project management role involved mobilisation, networking, process management and communicative consultancy work with BMZ and the co-organisers.
