Munich Re Foundation

Five years of experience

Any organisation that covers risks worldwide needs answers to tomorrow’s questions today. Munich Re works in 60 countries with scientists from 80
In the five years since it was created, the Munich Re Foundation has established itself as a player of international renown in the foundation landscape. AgenZ provided consultancy services during the set-up phase, advising on the foundation’s positioning and activities. In 2009 AgenZ was commissioned to carry out a qualitative evaluation of the foundation’s past five years.
disciplines to find solutions to global risks. It is internationally renowned in the fields of environmental management, climate change and natural disaster risk assessment. Munich Re has extensive knowledge of geo risks and is committed to preserving and applying this expertise through its foundation. But a foundation also needs a unique identity, which it must communicate. Munich Re turned to AgenZ – an expert in the field of communication – to develop the foundation as a brand.

Based on a qualitative survey, AgenZ carried out an analysis of the foundation’s potential sphere of operations and developed a positioning and communications strategy: key messages were defined, the foundation’s corporate image was developed, and preparations made for its public launch in April 2005. The slogan ‘From knowledge to action’ illustrates the Munich Re Foundation’s mission: using targeted education campaigns, it seeks to improve people’s lives – especially in developing and emerging countries – and solve current global challenges. Initial steps in this direction included a conference on micro-insurance held in October 2005 and an international symposium entitled ‘Worldwide Disaster Preparedness – Awareness is the Key’, held in November 2005. AgenZ provided communications services for both events. The aim was to launch and increase public awareness of the foundation.

An evaluation of the foundation’s activities

AgenZ was recently commissioned to review the first five years of the foundation’s activities. The study that AgenZ submitted in October 2009 was based on a detailed analysis of the foundation’s projects, its competitive and cooperative environment and its public effectiveness. It showed clearly that the foundation has lived up to its slogan ‘From knowledge to action’, illustrated by the wide variety of projects and levels on which it works. International conferences on micro-insurance, flood warning systems in Mozambique and Tonga, and dialogue forums are just a small selection of projects that have been implemented.

Based on the analyses, interviews were conducted with experts that not only lend the study a personal note but also confirm the data collected in the analysis. The foundation’s expertise and its integration into global networks have made it an important partner for international organisations – in particular on matters relating to climate change, disaster prevention and micro-insurance.
