Ke Nako Africa
Africa welcomes the world
The greatest sporting event on earth, the FIFA Football World Cup 2010, is about to get under way, hosted by South Africa. It is the first meeting on the continent of Africa of the world’s football nations – 32 teams playing for fame, glory and the chance to win the World Cup at nine different venues from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The FIFA World Cup represents an enormous challenge for the South African Government, the event organisers and the private sector. But more than anything it represents a great opportunity for the country and the continent of Africa as a whole. For the tournament offers an ideal platform on which to promote development policy messages.
What are the professions and personalities, the unusual ideas and approaches that shape business, culture and society in Africa and Europe? Where are the points of contact? How do European and African business partners develop links? What forms of partnership promise the greatest opportunities? World Cup or no World Cup, these are all issues of crucial importance to Africa. But they are also questions that find their target more effectively when raised in the context of a unique sporting event, because they are buoyed along on a tide of understanding and enthusiasm that helps broaden the visitor’s perspective. This is the basic idea behind a cooperation venture between South Africa and Germany against the background of this year’s Football World Cup. AgenZ has based its conceptual advice and management on the recognition that Africa’s time has come and that the spotlight of a major communications event is the ideal platform on which to showcase the legacy of the World Cup – a strong and sustainable partnership for business, culture and sport. ‘Ke Nako Africa’ offers a taste of what is to come.
Ke Nako Africa The Exhibition
On behalf of the South African Ministry of Sport, GTZ AgenZ is coordinating and running a meeting place and interactive exhibition entitled Ke Nako Africa. The four-week programme is part of the International Football Village, a major event staged on the outskirts of Johannesburg that will cater for up to 10,000 visitors daily. Bringing together African and European actors from the worlds of politics, business, culture and sport, it will provide opportunities for partnerships that reach beyond the Football World Cup and symbolise a new, modern and innovative Africa.
The exhibition area also features a wide-ranging and ambitious support programme of discussion forums on issues of current sporting and political interest, as well as cultural and musical performances from all over southern Africa. The South African Ministry of Sport, for example, will present the Youth Development through Football programme, a high-profile and successful development cooperation project with GTZ in the field of sport. The large open-air stage will also feature a variety of bands, theatre ensembles and dance groups representing the whole of southern Africa. And in addition to accommodating Ke Nako Africa, the International Football Village offers exhibition space for private enterprises, generous public viewing areas and a range of other cultural activities and entertainments.
One Team – 15 Nations for Investment
With its campaign ‘One Team – 15 Nations for Investment’, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is also using the football tournament to showcase the region as an attractive opportunity for foreign investment. Its message is that the regional community is at its strongest when its 15 member states work together. The SADC presentation, also supported by AgenZ and integrated into the Ke Nako Africa meeting place, highlights how regional integration and cross-border projects not only contribute to conflict resolution and crisis prevention, but also offer great potential for economic development. An ambitious dialogue process will help to promote and illustrate the experiences and projects of the individual countries and boost potential for cooperation with partners for investment in the region. Existing SADC regional programmes in the 15 member states are also presenting their work with a focus on investment opportunities, a free trade area, trade and industry, infrastructure, services and tourism, also on the site of the International Football Village.
