Yes, we will make it!

The route to EURO 2012

When one match ends, it’s already time to think about the next match. In mid-July, when the last whistle blew at the first football World Cup on African soil, football fans began to turn their attention to Poland and Ukraine. Because these two countries will jointly host the European football championships in 2012. Preparations are already in full swing. Particularly Ukraine still has many challenges to deal with if it is to stage the championships successfully.

‘For Ukraine and the city of Lviv I see the European Championship as a first step towards integration with the European Union,’ says Oleg Zasadny, director of the EURO 2012 department at the Lviv city authorities. ‘The tournament gives us the opportunity to show our potential and to prove that our country is capable of successfully implementing important changes in the fields of infrastructure and legal reform.’

Ukraine is setting great store in EURO 2012 and especially in the impact it will have after the championship. Equally great are the challenges facing GIZ as one of the partners. Its task is to support and shape the far-reaching transformation processes.
AgenZ, in cooperation with the GIZ Office in Kiev, is responsible for the complete range of consultancy and management services underpinning Germany’s support for EURO 2012 in Ukraine. An effective transfer of know-how will be guaranteed by bringing on board experts with extensive hands-on experience in preparing and implementing the world cup tournaments in Germany and South Africa as well as the 2008 European Championship in Switzerland and Austria. Workshops, one-on-one consultancy inputs and study trips are the capacity development measures through which lessons learned in Germany are shared with the eastern European hosts. The aim is to strengthen national, regional and local institutions on a sustainable basis. The focus is on three key elements:

Preparing for an international sporting event

  • Analysing Ukraine’s capacity to hold this major international sporting event
  • Identifying relevant stakeholdersPrioritising and planning action needed in the run-up to the event
  • Assessing the sustainability of the planned measures and adapting these where necessary
  • Providing advisory services from a pool of experts - assembled by AgenZ - with hands-on experience in implementing major sporting events
  • Organising study trips for training purposes
